Kidney Disease is a long-term condition where the kidneys do not work effectively. Chronic kidney diseases (CKD) result from recurrent or progressive injuries in glomeruli, tubules, interstitium and/or vasculature. Our animal models provide means to study pathogenesis, mechanisms and effects of interventions, including spontaneous, genetic and induced models.

Animal models of CKD provide opportunity to investigate disease-specific mechanisms, to investigate molecular pathogenesis, and assess potential novel therapies. Rats and mice remain principal and indispensable species used by investigators in the field of nephrology. Establishment of authentic animal models is of vital importance in delineating the mechanisms of a range of human kidney diseases and in evaluating the feasibility and efficacy of novel therapeutic interventions.

Non Rodent models like the zebrafish, allow for experimental analysis of gene function and the detailed characterization of disease processes. Zebrafish are an accepted vertebrate model which unbiased mutagenesis data making them most sorted model organisms after rodents.

Women’s health: Women and men have many of the same health problems, but they can affect women differently. For example, women may have different symptoms of heart disease. Some diseases or conditions are more common in women, such as Alopecia Areata, and Hirsutism. And some conditions, such as Menorrhagia, uterine fibroids, menopause and pregnancy (In-vitro Fertilization) are unique to women.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune associated with hair loss usually from the scalp. The immune cells target the actively growing anagen stage hair follicles. The disease is recurrent and non-scarring in several mammalian species. Hair loss can occur rapidly, slowly or at irregular intervals.

Menorrhagia & Uterine Fibroids: Menorrhagia is often characterized by abnormally prolonged menstruation. The symptoms of the disorder include uterine tumors, blood coagulation, and fibroids in the uterus. Due to its multi variant etiology treatment is symptom oriented.

Hematology: Anemia & Hematopoiesis:

Blood diseases affect the production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, and mechanism of coagulation. In hematologic diseases, such as sickle cell disease (SCD) and Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), pathological biophysical interactions among blood cells, endothelial cells, and soluble factors lead to micro vascular occlusion and thrombosis.

In-vitro endothelial microfluidic microvasculature model recapitulates and integrates pathophysiological processes. Under controlled flow conditions, the model enables quantitative investigation of biophysical alterations in hematological disease collectively leading to microvascular occlusion and thrombosis.

Microsystem can function as an In-vitro model of HUS. These models establish the versatility and clinical relevance of our microvasculature-on-a-chip model as a biophysical assay of hematologic pathophysiology as well as a drug discovery platform.

Our research laboratory provides expert services on Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) studies. We offer tools for research on HSCs including active proteins, specific antibodies, cDNA clones and HSCs markers. In-vitro assays include conditions supporting both hematopoietic (red blood cells, granulocytes, macrophages, platelets) and non hematopoietic (mesenchymal) cells such as Colony Forming Cell (CFC) or Colony Forming Unit (CFC) assays.

Thrombosis: is a disorder which can cause serious complications and the underlying cause of myocardial infarction and other cerebrovascular diseases. The reasons for this disorder can be frequent air travel or treatment with hormones and other cancer drugs. We offer animal (mouse, rat and non-human primate) models of thrombosis offer a well-established paradigm for testing potential therapeutics against the disease, with phenotypes closely resembling the human condition. Hemophilia is a hereditary disorder caused as a result of mutation which leads to deficiency in the clotting factors (Factor VIII & IX). Our animal (mouse, rat and non human primate) models help to test potential therapeutics against the disease, with phenotypical characteristics which closely resemble human conditions. Leukemia also known as blood or bone marrow cancer is characterized by increase in White blood cells (WBC). The forms of leukemia have been classified further as Acute & Chronic based on the affected blood cell. However the etiology of the disease varies.
